Getting The Most out of WinMX
WinMX is a great program for sharing information and files, but without the proper know how you will not get anywhere.
So here are a few tips for newbies and anyone who is feeling mistreated by this great program.
1) Always keep your files shared. Monitors keep low or no file users from downloading. As a standard you should have atleast 100-150 files shared or you will have a hard time downloading. Also whatever type of file you are downloading, should be a file type that you are sharing. Most users monitor their queues and if they see a user trying to download (lets say a movie) and that user has no movies shared then they will boot or ignore you.
2) Use a monitor such as MXMonitor or LeechHammer if you are having problems with leeches or queue hogs. Such users will make it difficult for you to get anything really done. These people do not deserve to download from you, because they are Anti-WinMX and Anti-Filesharing. This also helps you keep tabs on people download from you, and what kind of files are doing what in you shares.
3)Go to sites like this one and others to learn all you can about filesharing and trends going on. Good sites to get information include:
Vladd's Site | WinMX Main Site | Sourceforge
and the list can go on and on. Just keep your eyes and ears open to what is going on around you.
4) Be Wary from certain products that may hinder WinMX.
Such Products include:
ZoneAlarm (For Some Users) | Firewalls | QuickMX | Other File Sharing Programs running at the same time | Kazaa | Virus-Scan (Some Products-For Some Users) | Routers | ....etc
**Some of these programs like Routers, Firewalls and Virus-Scan products can be configured to work with WinMX, but until you do configure them you will have problems.
5) In addition, be wary of your file sharing. Do not download .exe files unless you are sure they are clean of of viruses. Always and I mean always run a virus scan on all files you download before processing those files. Anti-Virus and Ad-Ware/SpyWare software is a must for all PC users not just file sharers.
6) Learn something and Apply it. Knowledge has never been known to hinder ones ability. Their is a vast world of knowledge on this subject and alot of it can be found here. Be a leader and help out those who are lost. It will help us all in the long run.
