I can recommend Picassa. It's a lovely little tool for quickly tarting-up slightly lacklustre images. It has a great set of filters included for doing stuff like sharpening, altering saturation, lighting, contrast, straightening, cropping etc. etc. Also it lets you make collages of your images and makes it easier to upload your pictures to blogspot blogs or to the "hello" instant messenger.
Whats more... if you have an oldish version you might be able to use wine to install it in linux too (depending on your distro).

As long as we're bumping Picasa, they also have a Linux version, so you might not have to muck about with Wine. http://picasa.google.com/linux/

(Then again, it might be fun to try both ways and see which you prefer)
