To run an automatic back-up procedure on shutdown, you need to create a policy to do this.
Click on Start, Run and enter Gpedit.msc, Ok, then click on Windows Settings then Scripts and select Add.
Now navigate to your program, or BAT file if you use one, and select it and exit from these screens.

Look at moongirl busting out the gpedit. Usually only Network Admins know what the hell gpedit is. However, there are two Windows Settings, one for Computer Config and one for User Config, probably would be best to use the computer one since those scripts deal with Startup/Shutdown. The User config scripts are for Logon/Logoff.
For those of you that never shut down you can also schedule Ntbackup (native back-up util included in XP) to perform daily, incremental, differential or system state backups of your junk.
