Anybody found a good registrar? I had read somewhere that it was possible to register a domain for free, through internic, but I haven't been able to find this.
As I can't find free registrations, I've been searching for cheap registrations. I've heard bad things about GoDaddy, so I won't deal with them.They've got good prices, but if they tried to screw Vladd over, I'm not working with them.
http://www.ns.com seems to be fairly cheap. Around $12 for a .com
I've found lots of results for cheaper and free domain registrations, but there are always strings attached, like hosting.
Anybody know of a better way to get a domain registered?

Hostforweb got use Enom to register and handle domains, and they have seemed pretty reasonable. I forget who they were with when I was with Canaca, but I had no problems with them (So I can assure you Canaca didn't handle the domains
)
I got cricketmx.com free when I got hosting with Canaca last year, but I think $10.95 to renew it is reasonable (Whoever Canaca were with wanted me to pay $20
)
cmxmods.net cost me $10.95 to register (through Hostforweb / Enom).
I also agree with Grinch, it should always be around $9.95 or $10.95, $12 seems a little high, but still good value really, considering .com.au are $50 - $100

I would never choose to host a site at godaddy. My personal experience with their attitude was bad.
They labelled me a spammer (BC I have sent a total of 2 mass emails since forums inception and AOL marked it as SPAM) and wanted me to pay a $50 re-activation fee so I could get MY info off of their server. What they were to retarded to do was block my ftp access. As soon as site went down, I grabbed everything.
As far as purchasing a domain, I doubt godaddy could screw you to much, however If i had purchased my domain through them I would have been screwed, bc they could have refused to release it until i paid the fees they wanted.
I use http://www.active-domain.com/ , have about 10 domain names through them. Never had a problem. $9.95 for .net,.com, .org etc.
.info is only $2.99 for first year. I have been considering about 30 of them.
I would always prefer to host at a different place than I purchase the domain name, keeps you less constricted.

I went to http://www.internic.net and browsed through the list of domain registrars there. It's nice to see registrars that start their names with an excamaiton point or three to make sure they're listed first.
I can deal with $10 for a domain registration. I was just hoping someone had a better price. Each time I think I see a great deal, there's fine print involved.
I'm glad to see that the people I work for aren't the only ones that have issues with aol. I had an irate aolien on the phone that couldn't understand why it wasn't my fault that her account had been disabled after aol spam filtered her invoice. I had to hold back laughter when she told me that she has a master's degree. I hadn't even called her stupid. I guess she's a mind reader.

I've spent some more time looking around. I read a while ago that there is a way to register a domain for free through internic, but I've never been able to figure it out.
http://www.1and1.com seem to be a good deal, at $6/year. I couldn't find anything bad about them, other than a bit of a hassle involving some paperwork. Something about having to fax a signature in or something. I spoke with a customer of theirs that was happy with the service, and says there is no price hike like on some other registrars.
Other than that, godaddy seems to be the next best price.
