Soon there will be CD and DVD writers which can also burn an image on to the label side of the disc. The system, called LightScribe, will be launced in HP drives from next month. Special discs are needed as the label side is coated with a light sensitive dye that darkens on exposure to the laser. The discs, by Verbatim, cost a little more than others but, the manufacturer says, less than the cost of buying extra sticky labels and printing ink.
At present, the discs are only monochrome, but HP and Verbatim say they are working on a colour version and that they aim to speed up the printing process which currently takes several minutes.
The starting price of LightScribe drives will be around $200.

i wonder if this will be any better then the current CD Printers out there (a printer made for printing text onto CDs directly) the current consumer CD printers out there can only print in 4 boxes (top, left, bottom, right) and the finished product looks kind of fugly.

Yes, it will be better. You will be able to burn whatever image you like onto your CD. A small barcode will also be burned onto the disc the first time you print a new one so that the drive will be able to orientate the disc properly if you want to add something more to the image later.
