90% of the time when i go to download off winmx it just stays on "waiting to connect" and just times out. what is going on here! plz help!!!!

He might even have windows XP which has a built in firewall or even worse upgreded to Service Pack 2. But to explain some of Grinches questions, if you are behind a router then its the case that however routers recognize for some popular applications the ports and will configure itself to those ports unfortunately for winmx it doesn't, now the default ports for winmx are in the settings, they are tcp 6699 and udp 6527, those ports must be configured manually in the router and forwarded to te inside IP.
Firewalls often have to be allowed as well to use the ports for winmx. So he is right please explain a lot about the questions he asked. I even would explain if you have more computers in the house connected to winmx because then you even might have to change ports.

i think my internet provider has installed a firewall when i installed my broadband. how do i get rid of it. ps. they are refusing to give me any info on the firewall(devious ********!)

You will need to go into your modem config screen. On the home page you should be able to select Advanced. Then select Pinholes in the advanced section. There should be something about adding a pinhole and that should give you a screen that looks like this:
Give the Pinhole a name like WinMX or something. Select TCP and enter in the TCP port number you are using for WinMX in all the sections asking for port numbers. Also enter in your internal ip address. Do the same thing for UDP.
