I installed Avantibot MOD at my site about two weeks ago (only takes a minute to install). That has stopped spambots in there tracks. As for human spammers, I've changed the registration process so new accounts has to be activated by Admin. Of course, this is no good if getting many new users a day as it would be a pain checking new users email addresses / IP, etc against possible banned ones.
I used to have Anti-spam ACP for phpBB2 and on average, on viewing the ACP > Spam log, getting around 50 spambots a day trying to regiser but failing at Captcha code lol.

I like the look of that, I might give it a shot. I didn't want to install anything which would slow down the registration time for real people (which things like the extra question can potentially do) but changing the background of the CAPTCHA shouldn't do that... thanks quahappy
