The whole point of the work is to share files, it is described on winmx's site...or was.

People like me who are on college networks, sharing is pretty risky business. Even I got caught downloading a movie on the "safer" Bit Torrent.

It's not so much that I dont want to share, it's that I can't share. Downlading a movie doesn't mean enough for my life to be destroyed. So, all the moni people are saying "don't download it then." Well what the hell is the point of the network if I'm not supposed to be downloading. Even if I did share there are always people who cancel your downloads are deliberatly slow down the uploads so that they can have all thier bandwidth. They're just as bad as me, if not worse. They actually hurt the network more than I am, simple math with prove it. If people can have an upload around 80 kb/sec, which is moving along pretty good, even is 30% of all users are leecher, it would be more effective. I contribute to the network by acting as a primary, at the highest setting.

You have to look at it in both ways:

A; without media winmx would be useless

B; without primaries there would be no network

so would you agree that a bigger network is better, or more media?

i'm not saying leeching is good, but, in my case, I would deem it acceoptable

Leechers are viewed as bad because 9 times out of 10 they aren't giving back what they take, i.e not sharing anything. When I was on WinMX I regularly had a queue of 100 or more and I only left one slot open but with almost full bandwidth allocated to them. Sometimes I would open up 2 or start users looking for smaller files. Leechers is a vague term that is used to refer to several types of users. It just depends on your version of it.

i liked winmx in the old days, i dont know if it was because there were more people on it, but it seems like i could always get what i wanted and when i wanted even with 56k. There were people telling me i couldn't download from them because i had 56k and that I was hurting thier "ping" time or some stupid *****.

How about that peerless client, or a client without a peer cache or anything, some magical application.

i would share if i wouldn't get summoned tommorow...

Until i can garuntee that it is competely safe to do so, I can't. My upload is around 2 MB/sec, which hardly ever gets capped.

People that are actively behind BT are working towards a trackerless protocol. I haven't been keeping up with it so I can't give any more details than that. Google will get you more answers than I can.

which would make it a little more secure. The way that it downloads is great, one random piece at a time. But the problem is the law, "in whole or part"

but i really dont care about the laws. If it is impossible for anyone to know what you downloaded, then i'll go for it.

ABout the proxy server idea. Yeah know one will know but. Who gets hammered? Whoever runs the proxy. I dont know how detailed some logs are, but if they match up your IP to the proxy to the source IP they'll nail you. They as in whoever runs the proxy. I dont think that they want to take responsibility.

To me the best way is to link private networks. Say I have a FTP site has a bunch of movies (do note that ftp references arent always accesible on http). And I know grinch well enough to know that he isn't an RIAA official or an idiot who would give out his username and password for access, he gets the stuff he wants, he runs his own network and has friends and so on and so fourth. The biggest weakness is idiots. Idiots tell everyone thier login details so their buddies, or better yet put it on a website for everyone to see. Then more and more people find out and eventually the RIAA and MPAA catch on to this and it's an easy kill for them. But otherwise it is illegal for them to try to investigate because it's private and unless they're hacking it is impossible for them to know.

i've heard, don't take this as the God's honest truth or anything, but i've heard that the RIAA is starting to purchase into ISP for Universities. So eventually yer a$$ is grass when it comes to d/l'ing while at Uni!
Now, as an elite of a private server. i only speak from my experiences ... you may agree or disagree... my server my rules! anyhow... as an elite i understand that everyone has to start somewhere when it comes to sharing. so if you log onto my server the first time and can't get even 1 file in the alloted time...you are leeching. now, if you can or can't share files on a p2p server, there are always other users who would very happily take your place. .....and... there are exceptions to this rule as well, cus i'll tell you all right now i'm the biggest leech out there! LOL
i very rarely share and rarely d/l too. most of the servers i hang on tho, i've known the elites forever and i'm mod+ for many many ppl. and the fact i'm a leech isn't a big deal. well... cus i'm me!

meaning the RIAA is spending money into Inter Net Service Providers (ISP) on school campus... not sure if that means the actual ISP's or on how those services are provided thro out the school. but somehow the RIAA is starting to crack down on Universities.

yeah because when there's 5,000 or 10,000 there's a lot of a reason to do it because it's easier, and it makes us college kids look bad since we're putting people like britney spears in the poor hosue. Invasion of privacy will remain invasion of privacy, they can't monitor what I'm doing on my computer, over the network. I tell you find a computer networking major they'll totally ***** them up. I mean some 14 year olds can do circles around me. Imagine what they can do. It's unlikely that they'll be crazy enough, most are nerd that listen to trance and put linux on thier xbox and get so bad that they make neckleses out of heat sink fans and stuff...I know someone who did that.
