WiFi security is getting worse...

RSA security has decided that companies are getting worse at keeping their wireless data networks secure. A survey of wi-fi networks in London, Frankfurt, New York and San Francisco found more than a third had basic security features turned off. Last year's survey found that 15% of firms had failed to take basic steps to improve security.

RSA are warning that increasing WiFi popularity makes it far more likely that unprotected networks will be found and exploited.

The problem that I see with wifi is that it is new technology and a majority of your Network Admins are old school and may not have embraced wifi. The fact is that wifi is here to stay and it will only increase in popularity. The Net Admins need to learn about the security features and implement them immediately.

its true - half of them got jobs back when people where despirate for anyone who knew the slightest things about computers (as in "you can install software? how would you like to leave your current highly paid job and come work for me for an even higher wage?" sort of times) and they keep theis jobs because they have experience - heh

the biggest problem is the people in charge of hiring/sacking people know even less

You may be right. A network admin recently told my boss (I heard him) that my machine has no viruses, no spyware and no P2P programs. He was right twice out of three.

you have no p2p apps or viruses then?

obviously not all network admins are like that (sorry to any network admins who do know the difference between Ethernet and PCMCIA ) but most of them are

every few weeks on fridays as part of my college course we have to basicly follow around one of the "IT Support Technicians" for the morning (apparently that helps us learn something?) and today i actually had to tell the one i was following around how to find out the IP Address of a windows 98 system, lol

I've recently upgraded to wifi. I haven't messed with it much. Set up MAC address security. I figure that's about all I need to worry about, as I'm not dealing with anything secure, and I don't expect to see any wardrivers in my small KY subdivision.

I did some wifi searches and it turns out there has been some searching in my area. I think it'd be interesting to see my house show up on some wifi map. We're also getting a Starbucks on the other side of the field. I wonder how their security is.
