10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know
February 2nd, 2009
Everyday I receive an email from somebody about how their account was hacked, how a friend tagged them in the photo and they want a way to avoid it, as well as a number of other complications related to their privacy on Facebook. Over the weekend one individual contacted me to let me know that he would be removing me as a friend from Facebook because he was “going to make a shift with my Facebook use - going to just mostly family stuff.”

Perhaps he was tired of receiving my status updates or perhaps he didn’t want me to view photos from his personal life. Whatever the reason for ending our Facebook friendship, I figured that many people would benefit from a thorough overview on how to protect your privacy on Facebook. Below is a step by step process for protecting your privacy.

The old invasion of privacy setting the scene for an arrest!
A burglar was caught by Italian police after logging on to Facebook while carrying out a break-in.
The owner of the house had left the computer on and when the Facebook site flashed up on the screen we had the name of the burglar and we simply went to his house and arrested him, as well as recovering the goods.

Facebook claims another "poster boy", they are the ones that post on Facebook...then get caught!
Take the case of Maxi Sopo, a 26-year-old criminal in hiding in Mexico who not only used his Facebook status to tell all and sundry what a good time he was having, but also made the somewhat elementary error of adding a former justice department official to his list of friends.

In status updates from Cancun, where the Cameroon-born fugitive was on the run from charges of bank fraud in Seattle, he said he was "living in paradise" and "loving it".

Sexiest Video Ever - Attack
May 18, 2010
Huge 'sexiest video ever' attack hits Facebook
'Stunning' attack targeted Internet Explorer users, planted adware on victims' PCs
Computerworld - A huge attack by a rogue Facebook application last weekend infected users' PCs with popup-spewing adware, a security researcher said Monday.
On Saturday, AVG Technologies received more than 300,000 reports of the malicious Facebook app, said Roger Thompson, AVG's chief research officer. AVG came up with its tally by counting the number of reports from its LinkScanner software, a free browser add-on that detects potentially poisoned pages.
"It was stunning, really, the number," said Thompson in an interview via instant message late Monday. "And stunning that it was not viral or wormy [but that] Facebook did it all by itself."

Good for you Rat, seriously, you're not missing out on anything...

But looks like facebook is going to try to make things "simple"

Openbook - Your Facebook Privacy
What is Openbook?

Openbook lets you search public Facebook updates using Facebook's own search service.

Facebook's bait-and-switch on privacy and their overly complex settings cause many users to post messages intended for their friends to 'everybody'.

That's the entire planet, for all time. This privacy-malfunction could have serious consequences if you're looking for a job, applying for college, or trying to get medical insurance.

What do we want Facebook to do?
* Make it easy to control and understand your privacy settings.
* Promise that they won't change them behind your back.
* Make new accounts private by default.

It wouldn't be hard to provide simple, clear groups of privacy settings. Here's our simple proposal...

well all in all there's really nothing wrong with facebook, but when people are adding all these junk "apps" to thier page and add every tom dick and harry to their page they're setting up the stage for viruses, hacking, and scams...and i can bet you about 90% or better of the people dont realize any of this...

Only yesterday my wife told me to check my Facebook account - something I rarely use - to see if a PM has arrived from another friend. If so, to delete it immediately as the link within contained a virus. Someone had "cloned" my friends' account or something. Yet my Privacy settings are set at max (or whatever it's called - my wife is the Facebook whizz, not me).

The PM I received looked utterly genuine right down to the avatar. If my wife hadn't had told me, chances are, I would had opened that link. From now on, I will treat Facebook like I do with my Hotmail attachments - refuse to open any unless I'm 100% sure and they are on my Contacts list (the latter applies to Hotmail). :)

Another reason why I'm not a Facebook fan. :)
