A key generator will generate a key for a program. For instance, you may have a trial version, so you get a key generator (keygen), open it up, copy the key, and paste it into the program when you are prompted. Is that a good explanation :?

I've noticed a lot of computer related questions are ending up in OT. Can we please use the Computer Support forums for these kind of questions.

John if you have XP home still on your machine I have a program to extract the key number for you .
It,s not a good idea to tap in any old number as this will get you into legal trouble , call into the chat room for the tool :)

You should be able to find it in the registry. I just can't seem to remember where.

They mask it as your registration number or something. Some goofy algo to make it unrecognizable. The keygen I use has a key viewer that can work it out (Prolly the same one that was suggested earlier in the thread) and then lets you change your key. It works on xp pro, but not so sure about the home version, which I don't use if I can help it anyway.

maybe we should move the computer category up on the page, that way more people are more likely to see it. Like above Off Topic but below News...
