OpenOffice.org Is Five Years Old!

On 13 October 2000 Sun Microsystems donated the source of StarOffice to the open-source community. Sun remains the project's chief sponsor and contributor, though the project can now boast contributions from Novell, Red Hat, Debian, Intel, and many other large and small companies, plus the very important and numberless contributions from independent developers, NGOs, and government agencies. All these have made OpenOffice.org not just a free alternative productivity suite but the best and most advanced productivity suite. And also a great community.

As I said in the other thread. This is good stuff. I love 1.1.2, 1.1.3 and 1.1.4. I'll be updating both my windows and linux installations very soon. Recommended.

I just thought I'd report that both my windows and linux partitions have upgraded versions of OOO installed. It runs smoother, faster and better. If you're into 'eye candy' you'll be pleased to know that it also looks better than previous versions.

Somewhere in these forums, wanabe said he thought the whole package was only about 50 MB. I thought that sounded a little 'slim' but wasn't sure and said nothing. In fact, the sizes are:

File sizes: Windows: 75 MB | WindowsJRE: 90 MB | Linux: 102 MB | Solaris (S): 104 MB | Solaris (X86): 95 MB

Also, be aware that you'll need a java runtime environment installed in order to use all features (yeah, that goes for linux users too). The recommended way to get OOO is bittorrent!!! (yay!) which saves a lot of time.

yea that open office 2.0 is really good i don't know wat .v i have on my red hat linux9 but it is a real good alternative to microsofts OFFICE software
