I guess most people play music in the background on their computer while doing things, I and most people I know do this. But the question is, how do you listen to your music?

I've gone through quite a few music players, back in around 2001 I used Sonique for a while, I think I got the program on a bootlegged disk of Windows programs from Malaysia. I had to wikipedia it just then to see if it even exists still - which apparently it does not (latest release in March 2002). Then in 2002 for a couple of years I used Winamp - thanks to WinMX the playlist ballooned to about 350 songs. Still to this day I think Winamp 3 is one of the best programs I have used. In late 2003 I got a new computer and then for the better part of 3 years I used Musicmatch Jukebox because it came preinstalled on the computer. I didn't manage the playlist very well though, I really only played a song every now and then rather than letting it play in the background.

Finally in 2006 I got an iPod, and I installed iTunes - and that is where I have stayed since then. I just passed 1000 tracks a few weeks ago - which compared to some people is nothing, I know :wink:

Although I picked winamp. I also use an mp3 player for my commute to work. At work to listen to the mp3's I d/l'd onto the hard drive I use Windows Media Player. There is this website called pandora.com which I LOVED, however they no longer stream music to residents outside of the US. NOW, with a house with a teenager and a pre-teen, we use youtube to play songs to listen to. Youtube allows you to create playlists!!

1k mp3's! That is a big deal. I can remember my first 1k mp3's. We had free dial up (back in the day free ISP's were given out and all you had to surrender was 2" of your monitor screen for adverts lol) I d/l'd 1k mp3's at 5kb or less in 9 months! Ahh, I miss Napster.

I use Winamp on the computer, and iTunes to sync to my iPod.

I actually don't feel I can vote.
I like winamp for windows. :)
I like amarok for linux. :D
I use a dedicated mp3 player OR my sony ericsson phone to listen while on-the-go.
My computer loves to reset my preferences to windows media player at every opportunity. :(
Vuze plays any ol' file I find on bittorrent. =D>

What can I say? :shock:

For the record, my computer reports that I currently have 2440 tracks on file. My phone features 246. My whole offline music library runs to hundreds of cd's so.... I've no idea how many tunes I've got.

I voted for "other".
I use Amarok (1.4) mostly, or stream Last.fm. Sometimes I'll use VLC if I don't want to mess up my Amarok playlist if I've been listening to a book.
I recently got a Sansa Connect on the cheap, which might be similar to the Vuze. I've been investigating options to convert video files for it, and it seems all of the attention has been devoted to the Vuze. Hopefully it's compatible.

Battye, 1000 songs? That must have cost a fortune. ;)

I rarely listen to music these days at home but when I do, as I don't have a vast music library, it's normally through WMP using original CD's. Most of time I tend to listen to music in the car on school runs to drown out the kids racket. ;)

When I went through a phase of retro Amiga gaming using WinUAE (PC Amiga emulator), I did use WinAMP to listen to mp3 Amiga music tracks. Better music management than WMP.

I listen to music in the car all the time as well. I used to burn CDs from iTunes of whatever my favourite music at the time was and leave them in the CD player until the next CD was burnt, but since getting my iPhone I plug it into the aux input and listen that way. Even though I had an iPod before the iPhone, I didn't carry it around with me - but now having the mobile phone/mp3 player in one unit makes life much easier, a portable library wherever I am :wink:

The music industry does alright out of me. Not that long ago I had a look to see just how well... over half of the library is legitimate. I guess you could say I don't know where the rest came from :wink: :wink:

You can tame Mr. Gates by going to Tools>Options and choose File Types and uncheck everything in the list, and Windows Media Player will no longer take over...

However I do use Windows Media Player, suprisingly enough it seems to handle a library of 26,000+ songs fairly well, although I usually use Google Desktop to do my hunting, trying to find a single song is done much easier this way verses looking though a folder with 1,000 artists.... I do use iTunes for my iPod, however I'm not impressed with how iTunes handles my library, slow to add new music, I end up having to re-add my music folder...

Assuming about 1Mb per minute of music (not excessive at all) and about 3 minutes per track that's about 78 gig. How big is your hard drive (it says 5TB in your sig)? I'm not saying it's a scary amount of storage space by today's standards, I'm just wondering where you put everything else.

There is 152 GB of music, most of the songs are in mp3 format with a minimum bit rate of 128 up to 320, i prefer higher quality. Movies there is 711 GB most are standard definition, about a dozen in HD which will be changing. TV EP's, I have about 60 different series, most complete, totaling 1,292 GB. In my computer I have 5 hard drives, 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB, 2x 1 TB, and 1.5 TB. Only problem I have is back up, I guess I've been lucky...
