Not one to be defeated, the Submit a Quiz True / False issue has been fixed. Well done battye for isolating and solving this! The problem centered around Step 2 of 3 - Enter the answers!. If one or more questions type was True / False and the corresponding radio boxes were not ticked, clicking on SUBMIT would redisplay Step 2 page but not re-show the True / False radio boxes, which meant you couldn't move onto Step 3 - Check your answers!

Quiz creator also get this message after clicking Submit on Step 2, if any entries are empty:

You haven't selected one or more radio boxes, meaning you still need to select a multiple choice and/or true/false answer, or you have not yet filled in the quiz name and category.

So as well as radio boxes checking, it also ensures that a Category has been selected and a Quiz name entered. ;)

battye - On Step 3 of 3 - Check all is correct!, is it possible to change: Verify the data you have entered, if it is correct proceed to submit the quiz. to: Please check all your entries, if they are correct, click on Submit below. If not, click here to return to Step 2 of 3 - Enter the answers!. (here being the link to the start of step 2 where both question and answer fields are available for editing. Clicking browser back would only take you to the page where Question fields can be altered.

Jan - Welcome to CMX! I'll let battye answer your unicode question. ;)

Here's the chat between battye and I today:
[10:14] <battye> Hi
[10:15] <Quahappy> Hey up!
[10:15] <Quahappy> Get my PM?
[10:15] <battye> no
[10:15] <battye> i will look now
[10:15] <Quahappy> okies
[10:16] <battye> okay I see, not a problem
[10:16] <Quahappy> I will leave this window though so I can catch up and do what I can. Keen to get it all done. :)
[10:16] <battye> I will be busy for the next 5 minutes or so
[10:17] <Quahappy> What time is it there?
[10:17] <battye> quarter past 7, night
[10:17] <battye> I will be around for the rest of the night, what time is it for you?
[10:17] <Quahappy> 10.15 am
[10:18] <battye> over the next 5 hrs or so, when is the best time for you to talk?
[10:18] <battye> I understand from the PM you will not have a lot of time today
[10:18] <Quahappy> I know - frustrating. Life gets in the way sometimes lol
[10:18] <battye> but you will be around for a few minutes here and there
[10:19] <Quahappy> Yes. Will try my hardest
[10:19] <Quahappy> Where are you up to at the moment? Want me to do a tester?
[10:20] <battye> okay, I'm free now.
[10:20] <battye> I worked on it for another hour after you left last night
[10:20] <battye> And I think I got it to a good stage
[10:20] <battye> I hope
[10:20] <battye> But in the forum you said you had a problem
[10:20] <Quahappy> Yrd - read your post. Determination battye. :)
[10:21] <Quahappy> * Yes
[10:21] <battye> Brq
[10:21] <battye> ;)
[10:21] <Quahappy> heh heh
[10:22] <Quahappy> Basically radio boxes were not showing.
[10:22] <battye> What did you do in order to get the radio boxes not to show?
[10:22] <Quahappy> This:
[10:23] <Quahappy> In step 2 - choose two true / false and one multiple choice..
[10:23] <battye> quiz title and category fields selected?
[10:23] <battye> or unselected?
[10:23] <Quahappy> then without ticking the boxes (for any radio boxes) clicked on Submit
[10:24] <Quahappy> I still didn't tick radio boxes and clicked on submit again
[10:24] <battye> I see
[10:24] <Quahappy> then this time radio boxes didn't show
[10:24] <battye> So it works the first time
[10:24] <battye> but not the second
[10:24] <Quahappy> Correct
[10:25] <Quahappy> Just tried it now - same result
[10:25] <battye> hmm
[10:25] <battye> okay, I will let you get to your other work for a while then. I'll try and fix this problem and I'll let you know when I've reuploaded the files
[10:26] <battye> I might need to reboot the computer though, are you able to save the chat so far?
[10:26] <Quahappy> OK, no problem
[10:26] <Quahappy> and yes to saving chat ;)
[10:26] <battye> Copy and pasting these chats are strange, you have to start at the top and drag the mouse down
[10:26] <battye> I might need to reboot the computer though, are you able to save the chat so far?
[10:26] <Quahappy> OK, no problem
[10:26] <Quahappy> and yes to saving chat ;)
[10:26] <battye> Copy and pasting these chats are strange, you have to start at the top and drag the mouse down
[10:26] <battye> then a new window appears that you can copy fron
[10:26] <battye> from
[10:26] <battye> does that make sense?
[10:27] <Quahappy> that what i did and it went pear-shaped. So will be extra careful lol
[10:27] <Quahappy> dont go just yet - going to copy now...
[10:27] <battye> ok
[10:29] <Quahappy> done - had to do it in three parts. it wouldn't scroll down lol
[10:30] <battye> yeah, weird quirk in the program I suppose
[10:30] <battye> I will reboot now, I will be back in a couple of minutes
[10:30] *** battye has quit ("Java user signed off")
[10:36] *** battye has joined #uqmtempchat
[10:37] <Quahappy> wb - i didn't answer your question above ^^^. Mo - I didn't select Category but did enter a Quiz title
[10:37] <battye> ok
[10:37] <battye> im sure it wouldn't have made a difference
[10:37] <Quahappy> Remind me to chuck this keyboard out of the window will you?
[10:37] <battye> its strange, but they are related
[10:38] <battye> do you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch?
[10:38] <battye> it is strange getting used to the keyboards on them, because they are on small touch screens
[10:38] <Quahappy> Nope
[10:39] <battye> even now after 6 months or so of using an iPhone, I can't type as quickly as I can on a regular keyboard
[10:39] <Quahappy> Wait 'till Windows 7 lol
[10:39] <Quahappy> be forever cleaning the monitor
[10:39] <Quahappy> lol
[10:39] <battye> oh yeah I heard about that
[10:39] <battye> I saw a demo on a video site
[10:39] <battye> bbc video or something
[10:39] <battye> and the guy was trying to demo it
[10:40] <battye> about 3 attempts before it actually worked
[10:40] <Quahappy> not like touch screen technology is new - been around for years
[10:40] <battye> not mainstream until Apple did it though
[10:40] <Quahappy> 3 attempts? That's not good
[10:40] <Quahappy> think I'll do it the old way - use end of a pen
[10:41] <Quahappy> Or the kids DS stylus
[10:41] <battye> you are using XP right now?
[10:41] <battye> or vista?
[10:41] <Quahappy> Done a retest - this time selecting a Category - still same result: Click submit twice and the true / false radio boxes not there
[10:41] <Quahappy> Vista
[10:42] <Quahappy> Vista downstairs PC and XP on one upstairs (which I don't use very often)
[10:42] <battye> So the question here is what is the difference between the first attempt and the second attempt
[10:42] <battye> why is the t/f not appearing the second time
[10:42] <battye> M/C is appearing alright both times yes?
[10:43] <Quahappy> M/C still boxes still showing each time yes
[10:43] <Quahappy> All focused on T/F
[10:43] <battye> ok I think I have found the problem
[10:43] <battye> try this for me, go back to the first attempt
[10:43] <battye> and click the page source
[10:43] <Quahappy> okies
[10:43] <Quahappy> Now?
[10:44] <battye> Search for <input type="hidden" name="true_false_questions"
[10:44] <battye> should be one match
[10:44] <battye> what does it say to the right of it? it should say value="... but what appears in the value attribute?
[10:45] <Quahappy> So step 2 - enter fields then click on submit then view source yes?
[10:45] <battye> yes
[10:46] <battye> so leave the fields blank (dont tick the boxes), click submit
[10:46] <battye> and then once the page has loaded view the source
[10:47] <Quahappy> <input type="hidden" name="true_false_questions" value="1,2," />
[10:47] <battye> that's good, now click submit again
[10:47] <battye> and look at the page source
[10:47] <battye> and search for the same thing
[10:48] <battye> I get value="" (ie. blank), so if you do as well then I think that is the problem
[10:49] <Quahappy> <input type="hidden" name="true_false_questions" value="" />
[10:49] <Quahappy> yep - got the same after clicking on submit again
[10:49] <Quahappy> so the value is going walkies
[10:50] <battye> ok, so if I can fix that hopefully it will work
[10:50] <Quahappy> I'm sure it will :)
[10:50] <battye> I will post back here when I reupload the file
[10:51] <Quahappy> Okies ;)
[10:53] <battye> Okay, give it a crack now
[10:53] <battye> Let me know if it works for you
[11:00] <Quahappy> trying now...
[11:00] <Quahappy> Sorry - got guys here laying laminate in the hall lol
[11:01] <Quahappy> Battye?
[11:01] <battye> no worries
[11:02] <Quahappy> IT WORKS!!!! Well done :D
[11:03] <Quahappy> Got to Step 3 after eventually63 6t6icking all radio boxes5
[11:03] <battye> that77 is aw67some
[11:03] <battye> lol
[11:04] <Quahappy> Sorry - my son was on my lap. He's a hard nut but crying .ever
[11:04] <Quahappy> every time the saw was switched on
[11:04] <battye> Nah it's not a problem, was only joking
[11:04] <Quahappy> Coward lol
[11:04] <Quahappy> I know pmsl
[11:05] <Quahappy> He beats up his brothers and sisters but scared of a mechanical saw!!! LOL
[11:05] <Quahappy> My son a coward that is lol
[11:05] <battye> lol
[11:05] <Quahappy> Well, I've been trying all sorts to see if anything else crops up while creating a Quiz and pleased to say...
[11:05] <Quahappy> ... no problems
[11:06] <battye> fantastic
[11:06] <battye> BUT
[11:06] <battye> I need to check the database
[11:06] <Quahappy> uh oh - don't like buts lol
[11:06] <battye> to make sure it is submitting properly
[11:06] <Quahappy> right
[11:06] <battye> so if you submit a quiz, I will go into the database and tell you what you submitted
[11:06] <Quahappy> Going to do that right now....
[11:06] <battye> if it is all correct, then I can finally move on to something else
[11:07] <battye> I will probably do the 'playing' mode next
[11:09] <Quahappy> Database entry check, 3 questions 1: T/F - answer True, 2: T/R - answer False, 3: M/C - Answer 1st
[11:09] <Quahappy> Database entry check is the name of the Quiz
[11:09] <battye> okay, I will post what is in the database
[11:09] <battye> when it finishes loading
[11:09] <Quahappy> MyAdmin?
[11:10] <battye> right, name is "Database entry check"
[11:10] <Quahappy> yep
[11:10] <battye> in category "1"
[11:10] <Quahappy> yep
[11:10] <battye> by quiz_author 1617, which is your user id
[11:10] <Quahappy> yep - i knew that lol
[11:10] <battye> quiz id: 27
[11:11] <battye> Question 1: werew rwewer
[11:11] <battye> Answer: True
[11:11] <Quahappy> Yep
[11:11] <battye> Question 2: wer we rewr
[11:11] <battye> Answer: False
[11:11] <Quahappy> Yep
[11:11] <battye> Question 3: erwwerwe
[11:11] <battye> Answer: ewrwer
[11:11] <Quahappy> Correct
[11:12] <battye> Multiple choices: ewrwer
[11:12] <battye> ewrwer
[11:12] <battye> ewr
[11:12] <Quahappy> That's all correct :)
[11:12] <battye> It is missing a multiple choice though, shouldn't there be 4?
[11:12] <battye> or did you only put 3
[11:13] <Quahappy> I only put three
[11:13] <battye> okay that's fine
[11:13] <battye> perfect
[11:13] <Quahappy> Got a question for you though
[11:13] <battye> yep
[11:13] <Quahappy> Spot on battye - knew we'd get there!
[11:13] <battye> ! :)
[11:13] <Quahappy> On step 2 when you click Submit
[11:14] <battye> yes
[11:14] <Quahappy> Is there anyway of showing radio boxes that are ALREADY ticked so save having to restock them?
[11:14] <Quahappy> *boxes
[11:14] <battye> In v2.2 maybe
[11:15] <battye> I think for all intents and purposes, it is okay as it is at the moment
[11:15] <Quahappy> It is - I agree 100%
[11:15] <battye> Could you try one other thing?
[11:15] <Quahappy> No probs
[11:15] <Quahappy> Fire away
[11:15] <battye> 4 question quiz, 2 t/f, 1 m/c and 1 input answer?
[11:15] <battye> but the t/f at #1 and question #4
[11:15] <Quahappy> ok - 2 mins
[11:15] <battye> m/c at #2 and input answer at #3?
[11:15] <battye> thanks
[11:16] <battye> and use 4 m/c for the m/c
[11:16] <battye> Just want to make sure that each quiz type is working because we didn't test input answer yet
[11:19] <Quahappy> We've got a problem
[11:19] <battye> damn
[11:20] <Quahappy> set up exactly as you said
[11:20] <Quahappy> clicked on submit without ticking radio boxes
[11:20] <Quahappy> question 4 - not showing true / false radio boces
[11:20] <battye> can you click back one page
[11:21] <battye> and check the page source?
[11:21] <Quahappy> can you give me 5 mins?
[11:21] <battye> for that true false value
[11:21] <battye> sure
[11:23] <battye> I do think I know where the problem lies actually, so while you are out for a few min I will try and write a fix
[11:36] <battye> right, I think I've got it. When you get back, double check also. but it is working for me now
[11:39] <Quahappy> Testing now...
[11:41] <Quahappy> Woohoo! Well done again
[11:41] <battye> :D
[11:41] <Quahappy> sorry - got called away to pay the laminate guys
[11:41] <battye> sounds like it all worked then
[11:41] <battye> thats okay
[11:41] <Quahappy> Battye - I'm going to have to shoot off now
[11:41] <Quahappy> Lunch then out and about
[11:42] <battye> not a problem, thanks for helping test it with me
[11:42] <battye> hopefully all of the bugs have been ironed out now
[11:42] <Quahappy> II will try testing other mixtures as well for submitting a quiz and post
[11:42] <Quahappy> should all be ok now
[11:42] <battye> will you be back today?
[11:42] <Quahappy> Anytime at all - only too pleased to help
[11:42] <Quahappy> I will be but what time I can't say
[11:43] <Quahappy> I will keep this window open though
[11:43] <battye> OKay, I will only be online for 3 more hours
[11:43] <Quahappy> I'll copy and paste all the rest as well (into Notepad)
[11:43] <battye> alright, thank you
[11:44] <Quahappy> np ;)
[11:44] <Quahappy> Bye for now and well done!
[11:44] <battye> post the chat on to the forum whenver time suits you, you don't have to do it now :)

Welcome to CMX Jan :)
I don't know much about encoding for different languages, but I think UTF-8 is acceptable? All phpBB tables are utf8_bin... so UQM will also use utf8_bin. At the moment I've got latin1_swedish_ci but that's only because I created the table using phpMyAdmin (using their defaults). It is easy enough to make it utf8_bin. I hope that answers your question, if not let me know.

No way  I don't want to touch the submission PHP again.
I could add a link using Javascript [something like window.history.go(-2), don't really know Javascript so it might be wrong] to take the user back two pages, but that is assuming that they haven't made any mistakes when submitting.

I like your phrasing better though, "Please check all your entries, if they are correct, click on Submit below" sounds nicer. So I will include that. I could also post here in the forum at some point the javascript so you can have that back link, but I won't include it in the MOD.

I am afraid I don't know enough about encoding to understand all the whats and whys.

But here is what happened when I tested the MOD:
I inserted words with the following characters: ȟ, ǧ, ŋ, č, ž, š, and the characters displayed correctly until final step when they were replaced with question marks (I don't recall if all of them, but certainly the first three). So I am guessing that there is something during the processing of the final step of quizz creation that ruins the UTF-8 encoding or just some of the characters.
I hope this makes sense. Again, I am not a programmer, just a user.
Let me know if this helps.

No worries.

On other hand, am I right in saying there will still be a Quiz Author ACP (if turned on via Admin CP >> UQM ACP, whereby they can Edit, Move and Delete own quizzes anyway. So if a Quiz Author makes a mistake, they have that (ACP) to fall back on? ;)

Jan: Okay, thanks for letting me know. I will ask someone who knows more about encoding to see why it is failing on that final step. :)

Yes, there will be a variety of editing options :)
Will you be able to join me in the chat again tonight, or are you busy again today?

I have updated the first post with a progress list. I will copy it again here:

SUBMIT PAGE
  • Select number of questions in a drop down menu [||||||||||] 100%
  • Step 1 of 3 - Enter your quiz! - Initial screen to select quiz type, enter question and answers [||||||||||] 100%
  • Step 2 of 3 - Enter the answers! - Second screen where you select using radio boxes the correct alternate (for multiple choice and true/false), input answers are already locked in. [||||||||||] 100%
  • Step 3 of 3 - Check all is correct! - The final stage where the user verifies everything they entered is correct and then they submit. [||||||||||] 100%
  • Fool-proof checks every step of the way [||||||||||] 100%
  • Allow bbCodes [||||||||||] 0%

Essentially, the submission page is now done. I just need to add in some code so it will convert bbCodes correctly, but that shouldn't be a problem.

Next stage is to build the "playing quiz" page, so any feature requests please let me know :)

Are you planning to enable pictures and short audio files to be part of the questions?

Quiz verification:

I like this message if you remove a question on Step 2 of 3 - Enter the answers! and then click on Submit, and then again on Submit for Step 3 of 3 - Check all is correct! I got the following message: You have left one or more question fields empty! Click the back button in your browser to return to the previous page, and ensure no fields are left empty.. Although, you do have to actually click the back button twice and not once to return to page where question fields can be altered.

Step 3 of 3 - Check all is correct! will be a real bonus because it could be viewed as a "Preview". This is greatly needed for when BBCode is allowed - especially images! This was sorely lacking in the phpBB2 version and I had to log into my test account and play the quiz to ensure the images were displayed.

"Playing Quiz" suggestions:

In our IRC chat earlier today you mentioned about other ideas, etc. and I brought up about live countdown timer which you said will go in, so look forward to that as I have this in for my phpBB2 UQM already and it's makes a huge different to be able to see a visible timer. ;)

Some of my suggestions has already gone in (Step by step - here) and pleased to see that. :D

Quiz Author / Moderator ACP (when we come to it):

I mentioned this in another topic but to save looking, I've quoted it below:
quahappy wrote:Quiz Authors - (Moderator controls: Edit Quiz)

Within phpBB2 UQM, editing a quiz does not display the correct answer (ticked radio box) - they are all blank. I know the correct answer for each question is stored in database but a visual would also help as it threw me off first time round thinking I had to tick all the correct answers again for True / False, Multiple Choice Quizzes before re-submitting a quiz with one question I had made a typo on lol.

Also, if this is to happen, ONLY Quiz Authors (not Admin / Quiz Moderators) should be able to see the correct ticked boxes in order to double-check answers. I think it is fair to say that majority has "Can Quiz Authors play own quizzes" is set to Off in Quiz ACP.
Other words, if I edit a quiz, change any text errors, then click on Submit, all the answers (only for True/False and/or Multiple Choice) become null if the radio boxes are not reticked. Is it possible to show the correct answers alongside the radio boxes to make everything easier? Basically, a bit like Step 3 of 3 - Check all is correct! but with the ability to edit question / answer fields? Hope that makes sense!

Anyway, let's commence on Quiz Play before I side-track you. :D

With bbCode enabled you will be able to add pictures. Because phpBB3 has a custom bbCode feature, I see no reason why you couldn't have a Quicktime or some other sort of audio bbCode to use. I won't be including quiz attachments at this stage (maybe in the future), so any audio files or pictures will have to be uploaded to the forum first using the regular attachment function.

Maybe selecting the questions you want to edit is a better option then? Rather than going through things you want to leave the same.

That certainly is a more viable option. :D

seams all to be okay, i'm testing it. One Question: Are the numbers of questions limited? I'd like to have a min. of 25 questions and all of them multiple choice ;) ... so it would be fine to get some more :)

Looking of the alpha version ;) of the mod ... i'd like it.

Hi Lugsciath. In the admin panel you will be able to choose the minimum and maximum number of questions allowed. For the alpha one that I linked to I used 3 and 9, but it can be changed to anything. :)
And yes, they can all be multiple choice; just enter the multiple choices into all of the boxes given - it will only be input answer if you give a single answer in the field provided, and true/false if you click the true/false button.

Hi

Look forward to seeing a downloadable version of this Quiz MOD. I don't know much about cricket, as my sport is speedway, but I trust that it will adapt.

Cheers

Hi, welcome to the forum uk_martin :)
I will probably release a pre-alpha version to everyone here at CMX as soon as the play quiz part is complete (as essentially adding/playing are the two vital features).

I have just finished adding bbCode compatibility to the adding quiz part, it turned out more difficult than I imagined as you can't use the same bbCode values over two columns in the database. In short, I had to re-arrange the database a bit.

This is what the table structure looks like now: (ignore the auto increments and the latin1 charset, they will change)

Code: Select all

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `phpbb3_quiz` (
  `quiz_id` int(5) NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `quiz_author` int(5) NOT NULL default '0',
  `quiz_category` int(5) NOT NULL default '0',
  `quiz_name` varchar(150) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_views` text NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (`quiz_id`)
) ENGINE=MyISAM  DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=4 ;

-- --------------------------------------------------------

--
-- Table structure for table `phpbb3_quiz_categories`
--

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `phpbb3_quiz_categories` (
  `quiz_category_id` int(11) NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `quiz_category_name` varchar(150) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_category_description` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_category_password` varchar(100) NOT NULL default '',
  PRIMARY KEY (`quiz_category_id`)
) ENGINE=MyISAM  DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=3 ;

-- --------------------------------------------------------

--
-- Table structure for table `phpbb3_quiz_data`
--

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `phpbb3_quiz_data` (
  `quiz_data_id` int(5) NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `quiz_question_id` int(5) NOT NULL default '0',
  `quiz_answer` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_correct` int(1) NOT NULL default '0',
  `quiz_uid` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_bitfield` varchar(8) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_options` mediumint(4) NOT NULL default '0',
  PRIMARY KEY (`quiz_data_id`)
) ENGINE=MyISAM  DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=22 ;

-- --------------------------------------------------------

--
-- Table structure for table `phpbb3_quiz_questions`
--

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `phpbb3_quiz_questions` (
  `quiz_question_id` int(5) NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `quiz_related_id` int(5) NOT NULL default '0',
  `quiz_question` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_uid` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_bitfield` varchar(8) NOT NULL default '',
  `quiz_options` mediumint(4) NOT NULL default '0',
  PRIMARY KEY (`quiz_question_id`)
) ENGINE=MyISAM  DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=10 ;

-- --------------------------------------------------------

--
-- Table structure for table `phpbb3_quiz_statistics`
--

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS `phpbb3_quiz_statistics` (
  `quiz_stats_id` int(5) NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `quiz_question_id` int(5) NOT NULL default '0',
  `quiz_submitted_answer` varchar(255) NOT NULL default '',
  PRIMARY KEY (`quiz_stats_id`)
) ENGINE=MyISAM DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1 AUTO_INCREMENT=1 ;
If anyone has any feedback about the quiz adding feature (primarily the bbCode part of it), please let me know :)
