With Windows98 my computer used to 'freeze solid' untill someone told me to use MaxMem. And it did a great job. It frees the memory occupied by programms that don't use it. The more free RAM, the faster and more stable a Windows machine is.
Now I use Windows XP and I still use MaxMem.
Easy to use. Left-click on it to run a fast sweep. Right-click/free/aggressive to free more memory.
Never crashed my computer in the 3 years I used it.
And It is freeware.
