Hard Drive + Power Outage

Can a power outage mysteriously cause a hard to stop funtioning properly, and eventually lead to not working at all? I've tried everything i could think of.

oh, and when i bought a new hard drive it gave me an error message in the XP installation setup that "setup cannot access this disk" , and then it went to a blue screen stop error. please help.

Most hard drives have fairly lenghty warrenties. Return it. It is pretty likely that a power outage (preceded by a jump in power) could screw up your hd, and other hardware as well.

I remember after a power outage my tower started to make dial-up modem type sounds, but it didn't have a dial-up modem installed.

lol that's kinda strange.... i bought the computer a few years ago, so i dont think there is a warentee on the computer, but i did return the hd

And here's a tip for computer buyers:

Dont buy dell, or gateway, or emahcines, hp, compaq, or whatever.


BUILD IT YOURSELF, you get the warranties on each individual piece of hardware. You are much better off.

That works for organized people, but for the way I keep track of stuff I'd be just as well off buying a dell and losing the paperwork on the first day. In fact, that would have happened if it hadn't been a joint purchase with the little lady.

I plan to piece the next few together, but I could still see getting a Dell laptop if the price drops a bit more. We're pretty happy with this one.

The only reason I thought to check for a warrenty on Joshua's hd is because my first computer ditched a drive a while back, and the shop that I parted it together from took care of the swap for free. Told me that most hd's will be covered for a long time.

Here's another idea, assuming it doesn't exceed 469 degrees

Put the paperwork inside the case at the bottom. There's usually some space at the bottom nothing will be touching it, but it will get a bit dusty...
