Aiming to crack down on counterfeit software, Microsoft plans later this year to require customers to verify that their copy of Windows is genuine before downloading security patches and other add-ons to the operating system.
Hmm, I see they are in a rush to move folks over to a free operating system :roll:

Just so you all know where I stand on this I believe they should make windows 95 open source or free licence and if folks want to upgrade they can pay hard bucks, if they dont its their choice .
They have made so many billions with their position as the monopoly supplier to the world that I dont think they would notice any change in revenue.

Absolutely. M$ don't actively support versions up to 98 anymore anyway. They certainly don't sell them. Why not let folks have old OSs for free? They're probably worried that many of their patents would be nicked by people decompiling older versions of windows if they changed the licence on them.

On the other hand, there are now lots of good OSs around that are mostly at least as good, and in some cases better, than windows. Why not try one of those?
