Looking to write a fraction (½) took me to a much underused area of my PC - The Character Map

In Windows XP go to:
*Start
*All Programs
*Accessories
*System Tools
*Character Map - here you will find characters with their meanings.
(Click Advanced View for meanings, search function & keystrokes)
*Click the required character, click select, then copy, then paste (control V or right-click paste).
Or
*Double-click the character then paste (control V or right-click paste).

In OS X go to:
*Edit menu
*Special characters, then copy.

I have tested it and can confirm this works :)
