Finnish authorities have today seized the computers of the administrators of Finnish site Finreactor which was one of the largest sites in Finland listing links to copyrighted materials in BitTorrent network.

According to sources, National Bureau of Investigation (Keskusrikospoliisi) raided the admins' homes today and seized all the computer equipment and storage media for further investigation, but released the suspects shortly after the raid. The site itself has been down since early hours of today. Site had over 37,000 registered members and had links to more than 6,000 pirated releases on BitTorrent network. Additionally, the forums of the site boasted a large number of links to releases in other P2P networks, most notably in eDonkey network.

Apparently the NBI acted after it received a request from Finnish copyright associations, including the BSA and Teosto (the Finnish equivalent of RIAA).

Hmm shame a lot of the Ip links are dynamically allocated , wonder why they took out the tracker though , just making the day of virtual trackers nearer, and encrypted drives a neccesity, may have been child porn scum using it though , nice easy way to catch them.

Yeah.... but was it?

Anyhooo..... Things are moving fast. Finreactor is gone, Youceff torrent (hosted in France, but not by a Frenchman) is now gone too. E-donkey sites in the Netherlands are being hit. On the music side, the RIAA has now filed over 7700 law suits.

A list from slycks site tells the story .
BitTorrent

It appears that BitTorrent trackers or indexing sites have not been targeted as harshly as eDonkey2000 link sites, at least not yet.

Youceff Torrents - One of BitTorrent's top Torrent sites was raided in France just two days ago. Although the Torrent sites continue to exist in a legally gray area, Arjan, the site administrator, has stated this site will no longer continue to exist. A definite blow to the BitTorrent community.

Phoenix Torrents - Although not as large as Youceff or other BitTorrent sites, Phoenix maintained a sizeable Torrent site. Unfortunately due to the current climate, they have closed their site and will not be returning.

ISO Hunt - ISO Hunt is an IRC and BitTorrent search engine. They also provide a BitTorrent Tracking service. Although they have not been shut down, they have been served with a Cease and Desist letter. From ISOHunt.com: "We've been emailed a cease & desist letter from them, with a "sample" of infringing links. We are in the process of working this out with them, as per our copyright policy."

eDonkey2000

eDonkey2000 indexing servers have definitely received the brunt in the current world wide campaign against movie piracy.

ShareConnector - Residing in the Netherlands, ShareConnector was widely regarded as the largest eDonkey2000 indexing site. After the fall of ShareReactor, this site seemed to easily pick up where this once powerful indexing site left off. However, it appears that ShareConnector's became a victim of its own success as Dutch authorities raided its servers and arrested its administration. We will probably never see this site exist again.

Releases4U - Another Dutch indexing site was raided the same day as ShareConnector. In all likelihood, this site has also been permanently eradicated.

FinReactor.com - Huge Finnish eDonke2000 link site has been removed. In all likelyhood, this site will not be making a comeback. According to FreeReactor.com, this site had well over 37,000 registered users and also provided BitTorrent links.

ed2k-it.com - This indexing site was temporarily off line, as it was audited by its web hosting company. The audit occurred on the 14th, however things appear to be back to normal.

AC3-Guru - AC3-Guru was mentioned in Slyck's top 10 ShareReactor alternative list. It is (was) an excellent indexing site specializing in DVD rips with AC3 audio. Although no official mention has been made, the site is currently inaccessible.

Osiolek.pl - Polish eDonkey2000 link site has been taken off line.

pmzq.homeip.net - FreeReactor.com has reported that this Dutch link site is also off line. However, no explanation currently exists.

I have a feeling that Santas bag will contain snakes and there will be no happy new year for all of us BT lovers.
But ya have to admit that this strategy of going after torrent sites and not individual users is effective and also isnt making them look bad in the public relations area by suing 12 year old kids (yet).
By shutting down a major site like Youceff they have taken a big chunk out of the community. Of course, when one goes down there will be two more to replace it - however, by making the consequences so unpleasant (raids and, sometimes actual arrests) there will be more people seriously thinking twice about starting new sites.
Remember this is like a game, we want files - they want to stop us. So far we have stayed way ahead of the game and laughed as they struggled to keep up, but in order to stay ahead p2p must constantly evolve.
So to the 'content cops' I say "Congrats on your small victory in this game" well played. I'll see you at the finish line.

As for me, 2005 may be the year I finally get a decent newshosting account.

That sucks :x that not good news for BT users. We better win the race to the finish line and always stay two steps ahead of them or there'll be no more BT or p2p.
It's a good strategy and a good PR going after the BT sites then going after the users like the RIAA does, they learned from the RIAA mistakes.
They might have won some fights , but they still didn't win the war yet :!:
Hopefully we the people will win the war and not GREEDY  corp. that over charge for DVD's ,CD's ,software ,games ect..
