Might sound like a stupid question , but is there anywhere you can get a free download of Linux legitimately and how many variants are there ?
All Linux distros are free. It is an open source project.
Your choices include:
Mandrake
Redhat
Debian
Gentoo
Slackware
Suse
The list goes on. A simple google search for any of these will get you to their download site. Most of them offer it as a torrent if you use BT.

If you want the full list go to http://www.linux.org/dist/
PS. Personally I'm running SuSE with KDE on my dual boot system at home.
