The Pirate Bay is reporting this morning on their blog that their massive database of user data - i.e. login names, passwords, email addresses, etc. - has been stolen. Considering the immense size of The Pirate Bay, this number totals over 1.6 million individuals.

Apparently, the hackers were able to find a security hole through The Pirate Bay's blog, and exploit it. Interestingly, The Pirate Bay team apparently knows the identity of the thieves. Fortunately however, the administration of The Pirate Bay doesn't feel there is any serious risk to the end user.

"They have got a copy of the user database. That is, your username and passwords. But, the passwords are stored encrypted, so it's not a big deal, but it's still very sad that it's out there. All e-mails are for instance encrypted as well, they will most likely not be able to decrypt them either (they are _very_ encrypted)."

Compromised user data has always been a sticky subject in the BitTorrent community, especially after LokiTorrents was forced to hand over such a database as part of their lawsuit settlement. As a precautionary measure, The Pirate Bay administration recommends that users change their passwords immediately.
