Whilst I like to keep my laptop desktop relatively clear - for example: I have no shortcut icons at all which I detest lol - I wasn't overly impressed with the limitations of the Windows 7 taskbar in terms of appearance. OK, in truth, I've always been a little envious of the "docking apps" on Mac computers. So after trying a few out I've finally settled for Rocketdock. It's really easy to use. Fully customisable. You can even change the template (skins) and font to your liking as well as choose exactly where on your desktop you'd like it displayed. It doesn't have to be displayed permanently either; you can autohide it.
