Mira - The 10 Petaflop Supercomputer

IBM To Build 10 Petaflop Supercomputer For DoE
Mira will be able to run programs at 10 quadrillion calculations a second. If every man, woman and child in the United States performed one calculation each second, it would take them almost a year to do as many calculations as Mira will do in one second. Argonne anticipates that the new supercomputer will be one of the fastest and most energy efficient supercomputers in the world after its construction and installation are complete thanks to a combination of innovative new chip designs and extremely efficient water cooling. They also envision Mira as " a stepping stone to exascale-class computers that will be faster than petascale-class computers by a factor of a thousand."

Peta-Flop
A petaflop is a measure of a computer's processing speed and can be expressed as a thousand trillion floating point operations per second.

FLOPS are floating-point operations per second. Floating-point is considered to be a method of encoding real numbers within the limits of finite precision available on computers.

Using floating-point encoding, extremely long numbers can be handled relatively easily. A floating-point number is expressed as a basic number, an exponent, and a number base which is usually ten but may also be 2.
