How do they do it?

In over 5 years I have never been able to get malware on my computer, and lets face it I go everywhere...hacker sites, and so on. What do people click on to get spyware on thier computer. Because I'm a techie this would help. I can get rid of, but I've never actually got any on any of my machines. We're constantly getting flooded with computers with things ranging from browser hijacks, trojan downloaders, viruses, adware, you name it. Keep in mind I'm not insulting anyone, I'm trying to find out way to help people prevent getting this garbage. I figure if i can go years without problems so can everyone else.

Bad neighbourhoods (porn sites, miracle drug sites, etc)? Although that really only works on IE through bad ActiveX things, and Microsoft may have patched that in the past few years.

Maybe open ports for people not using a firewall or router, and people/programs getting through.

It could also be people downloading programs ad nauseum (trial versions, shareware, whatever) and opening them, picking up crapware in the process.

I do none of the above

I would put myself in the extremely cautious surfer category.
Still don't know where the Trojan Horse Dropper came from & it would seem no one else can work it out either.
I was looking at one of Google's Images pages when I got the AVG warning

Quite a few years ago, despite having the best security software on PC, I got infected with a trojan (can't remember what one) just by visiting a website.... a Model Village for some place in Devon, UK! It hadn't been updated for so long, the site had been hijacked and infected. Fortunately, it doesn't happen so much now as search engines are more reliable. Yet, as you mention Moongirl, I'm still a cautious surfer too. I tend not to look further than "page 10" of search engine results as that's when sites tend to get a bit dodgy. i.e. carefully misspelled websites addresses that lead you to porn. Niiiiice.

With me it's been more or less a "Click and Learn" process over the years...

First internet experience (2003) with my own computer and connection: I established the connection, started surfing AAALL kinds of Crap and my computer clogged-up within two days.
So, while re-installing Widdows-2000 on a re-formatted C:, I got the brotherly advise to first activate firewall, second install AVG (and run it!) and only start surfing after all that was in place.
I've been quite clean ever since.

Here's some more questions, do or don't bother to answer them, your choice...

How can people download pics, songs, clips and apps without knowing in which folder they will be put?
How can people share their entire root (Including C:/windows  ) on a P2P-channel?
How can people dubble-click attachments in E-mails they KNOW where not sent by friends or relatives?
How can people blame their computers for the Sh|t they pull themselfes?

As usual, the error is detected between the keyboard and the chair.
