Sun's release covers all aspects of the Solaris operating system, ranging from kernel technology to network management. Patents for Sun's newest technologies, such as the anticipated Dynamic Tracing, will also be available.
This follows a similar annoncement from IBM who have made available software covered by 500 patents
The patents included in the release are applicable to a wide variety of processes. It is fertile ground covering everything from basic protocols to more advanced tools and techniques. A brief review of the titles released finds items relating to interfaces, storage management, video, networking, data processing, speech recognition, compression and encryption, and much more.

This is a good move as It will stimulate free exchanges of ideas and possibly end the current monopoly exercised by the the biggest software pirate of them all.
