Canadians overwhelmingly support higher CD-R fees, according to survey

9/1/2006 2:24:40 PM, by Anders Bylund

American copyright and intellectual property legislation may at times give us headaches and make us long for Canada, but the situation up north isn't necessarily that much better. Case in point: a recent survey of Canadian consumers has been submitted as support for continuation of levies on blank media sales. The levies are sort of strange to begin with, but this survey should not be permitted within 100 feet of a legislative decision.
The story so far

Canadians have been paying a fee of 21¢ (Canadian) on every blank CD since 1999. Blank cassette tapes are subject to a 29¢ levy (PDF), while MiniDiscs and CD-R Audio media carry a much higher 77¢ charge. Two-thirds of the fees collected are handed out to organizations representing copyright owners, 19 percent goes to performers' unions, and the remaining 15 percent to a media makers' union.
