MetaMachine's fate seemed well sealed when Sam Yagan, president of the P2P development firm, said he was "throwing in the towel" before the United States Judiciary Committee. If throwing in the towel means developing a new software version, then perhaps many of the P2P doom and gloom scenarios were just a bit premature.

Instead of folding like a cheap suitcase, MetaMachine made the surprising decision to announce an upcoming version of eDonkey - the official client of the eDonkey2000 network. Although a well functioning and popular, recent legal entanglements and slow pace of development have brought the competition into favor. eMule, the open source alternative, has stolen much of the show from eDonkey. Some estimates suggest approximately 90% of all clients connected to the eDonkey2000 network are eMule clients.

That still leaves about 10% of the network populated with eDonkey clients. With a total population of nearly 4 million that still leaves over 400,000 individuals – more than enough to revitalize the MetaMachine end of the eDonkey2000 network. In order to revitalize however, they need to stay relevant; which means reversing the impression given before the Judiciary Committee.

The first step in reversing this impression is to build anticipation for an upcoming release. Jed McCaleb, lead programmer of eDonkey, posted the following message on the eDonkey forums:

“… I know it has been awhile but we want to put out a new version soon. What would you like to see in it?â€
