This P2P is rather popular so I thought I,d better post some info for those thinking of trying it :D
It seems to be a server operated system that is moderated , a list of rules can be found here

http://www.slsknet.org/rules.html
Soulseek is an ad-free, spyware-free, just plain free file sharing application.
Ok you,ve read the rules, sound ok ? Get the download from here

http://www.slsknet.org/slsk152.exe

Any other problems go to the main site here

http://www.slsknet.org/

Soulseek(tm) does not endorse nor condone the sharing of copyrighted materials. You should only share and download files which you are legally allowed to or have otherwise received permission to share. Soulseek(tm). was created to encourage the sharing of public domain music from unsigned, independent artists willing to share their work and communicate with a large audience in an efficient way.
Any feedback is always appreciated :)

Probably one of my favourite P2Ps. I use it the most, and gave up on WinMX to use it exclusively. That chat rooms, chat wise are pretty bad, but going to in just to use the handy room search brings back faster results. Only problem I've seen is that there is no ability to pause downloads, in case you were downloading too much.

As for the moderation, by admins there isn't much. But many users are strict in their own set of rules, which aren't usually very harsh, just anti-leech. A big call for file organisation there too, with the download folder option.

Welcome to the Forum Brain Toad. :D
We have a room search tool in some rooms now for hosts that wish that facility called shareguard, but besides from that its mostly the same old MX ,
I am still not planning to move away from it yet
Thanks for your good info though, we rely on helpful folks like yourself to keep our knowledge base up to date, and Soulseek users seem never to pay us many visits so I,m glad you took the time to fill in a few gaps :)

Thanks for the welcome and I'm glad I can help. WinMX is still a powerful tool, it's just the stuff I look for is few and far between, and is in much greater numbers on Soulseek. But I'm a WinMX Chat person through and through.

Nice to hear it , I actually spend more time in the chat rooms than actually using Mx, its the great community on there that keeps it fresh for me.

A little bit of Soulseek news.

They recently released version 156 which fixed a big problem with the searching. However there was another error with 156 that caused a memory leak which lead to many people's soulseeks locking up or their computer slowing down to a snails pace. The biggest fix I've seen is getting 156 from the download page.

http://www.slsknet.org/download.html

Installing that. Then getting the fixed exe at

http://www.slsknet.org/checkmeout.zip

Using that to replace the old one. And there you have it a perfectly running soulseek with a great search and no memory leaks.

EDIT: Going to the download page I see they replaced the old 156 with the new patched one, so ignore the checkmeout.zip and just download 156b.

the NS (new server) client offers numerous optimizations and bug fixes, and a fair number of new features over the original client. both NS and original clients may be installed and run side by side.

Changelog
Search engine exploit patched. Exploit could be used by a modified client to crash another client remotely, and possibly execute custom code by creating a stack overflow.
