Re: Utorrent
I used to use uTorrent a lot about 10 years ago, and it was compact and light on resources. I was concentrating on building a nice little library of music from lossless--FLAC. It worked well for me. I downloaded and shared a crapload of nice audio. I've gone through a few PCs since then and never in...

Verdict in Jammie Thomas file-sharing retrial.
This just in... http://tinyurl.com/nyphua I don't have any details yet on the case and what went wrong. But Thomas went from suffering a 200K damage award against her in the first trial, to 1.92 million in damages in this one. About $80,000 for each song she allegedly shared. We'll have to wait and ...

Harvard Law prof and group of students take on the RIAA. This article should illustrate what can be accomplished by a few bright students pursuing the right cause: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2009/02/tell-the-riaa-to-take-a-hike-how-harvard-law-threw-down-the-gauntlet.ars It also doesn'...

Re: Legal news stories and other items of interest
I think there are two driving factors in the decision. One, that the RIAA is finding their litigation carpet-bombing to be counter-productive, and two, that it's easier for them to shift the burden of enforcement to the ISPs. The RIAA will still be hiring research companies to monitor P2P traffic. E...

Re: Legal news stories and other items of interest
RIAA to end file-sharing suits in U.S. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,470039,00.html I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't dreaming. After beating up 35,000 people, maybe they finally get it. Looks like the remedies from now on will be to alert the ISP, with the ISP telling the user to s...

Harvard law professor challenges constitutionality of U.S. Digital Theft Deterrence and Copyright Damages Improvement Act of 1999. http://www.schneier.com/blog/archives/2008/11/riaa_lawsuits_m.html The law prof's argument is that the law provides strictly punitive (and thus criminal) penalties for ...

Re: [ Poll ] What type of mp3 player do you use?
I have a crappy, 1GB Sony player I rarely use. Requires me to convert to their proprietary ATRAC format and s/w is not the greatest. I bring it on airline flights, as it is compact. Received it as a gift a few years ago, so can't gripe about it too much. I listen to music at work, and use a personal...

Fifty BT hubs shut down in Australia.
After Swiftel was raided by the Australian Music Cartel, it was ordered by a judge to pull down any BT sites it hosted, resulting in 50 of them going dark.
Cheers.

Can online posts to user communities draw unwanted attention? I have thought about this issue a lot recently, especially in light of some of the recent legal activity surrounding weblogs and other online publishing. I asked myself whether certain comments online that point to allegedly infringing a...

Meet John Doe. An article in the Village Voice decribes what it's like being on the receiving end of a lawsuit by the RIAA - as told by one such defendant. Interestingly, the author stated that many of his friends continue to download, despite his legal troubles. So much for the deterrence factor o...
